After reading the three assignments I would define genre as a group of compositions that share similar traits and remind the reader of one another. One example of a genre used in Dirk’s Narrating Genres was a ransom note. Dirk gave three examples of ransom notes that all had different tones, yet he got the same message across in all three because of his word choice. One example of the ransom note was stronger than the others because it was well written and directly portrayed the writer’s intentions. However, because all three of the letters had the same style, audience, and content they all fall into the same genre of a ransom note.
The last genre that I composed was an academic research paper for my CGS2100 class last semester. I researched the history of the television and its impact on 20th and 21st century life. I formatted it as my teacher had told us to by using titles, subtitles, pictures, and captions. The genre of a research paper can be written and formatted in many ways depending on the purpose of the paper and the person into whom it will be turned in if it is an assigned academic paper.
