Valentine’s Day is a day full of love and happiness. However, the main genre convention of Valentine’s Day is giving. Lovely couples will buy each other gifts such as chocolates, flowers, cards, etc. Even younger people who have no significant other will buy their classmates Valentine’s Day cards and little candies. This day is about making others feel special and showing that you care for them. It doesn’t even have to be an intimate partner. Flowers can be sent to any special lady in your life such as your mom, sister, sister-in-law, etc. Same goes for chocolates or another item for special guys. Overall, Valentine’s Day is composed of pink hearts, cute cards, red roses, boxes of chocolates, giving, and loving.
A pop culture example where these genre conventions are subverted are the ecards created by websites such as tumblr, twitter, etc. These cards refer to pop culture icons and put a satirical twist on the classic Valentine’s Day cards people would originally get each other. These cards serve to entertain and put a lighter mood on the holiday as a whole as compared to the stiff expectations expected before.
